Relay all Year: Dedicating Luminaria for Relay
On of the most memorable and emotional parts of the Relay for Life event is the lighting of the Luminarias after dark. Luminarias are white paper bags decorated with the names of those whose lives have been impacted by cancer. They are placed around the track and contain lit candles to help remind us of their fight against the darkness of this disease.
Luminarias honor every life touched by cancer. You can dedicate them to a loved one lost, someone currently battling, or anyone who’s overcome it.
After dark, we take a moment of silence to remember the loved ones they’re dedicated to.
Your team can raise money by asking for a small donation (usually around $10) to create a luminaria in honor of someone touched by cancer. Plain white paper bags are available at each team captain meeting for you to use. Decorate your bags as you receive your donations, and bring them to the event. Here they will stand side by side with those of other teams to bring light to darkness and to send a message of hope and love.
If you have any questions or would like to learn more, please contact us at relayneighborhood@gmail.com or ask at the next team captain meeting.
