Relay Neighborhood
Please read the following regarding the volunteer hours we have available for our Relay for Life event planned for Saturday May 20 at Riverbends Park. Relay for Life is the American Cancer Society’s biggest fundraiser and these events would not be possible without volunteers.
We have a variety of opportunities available. There is a summary of each below, but the best way to get information is to attend our monthly meetings. Our next meeting is Thursday March 16, 6:00 pm at the Shelby Township Activities Center at 14975 21 Mile Road and we’d love to see you or any of your volunteers at this meeting.
Broadly speaking there are three types of opportunities:
The first set of volunteers will be needed the day of the event. No preparation will be needed. Volunteers sign up and show up on the day of the event to help out for the 2, 3, or 4 hour blocks of time.
The second opportunity is offered to volunteers who are gung ho about our mission and would like to either start a team for your school or honor society. If your school or honor society would like to take on a team, we would need one student lead and one faculty lead. It would require someone on the team attending 5 one hour meetings (one a month) as well as being active participants the day of the event. I would encourage you to recruit other students and their families to participate on May 20 as well. Any time your students spend preparing for the event would qualify for volunteer hours too.
The third opportunity is for volunteers to choose a fun/exciting activity and take charge of organizing it and running it the day of the event. This would also require attending our meetings once a month, working with other volunteers at these meetings, then spending two or three hours at the event to run your activity.
I imagine there will be a lot of questions and we will happy to answer them. This is a fun and meaningful way to give back to the community and we look forward to meeting and working with all of our 2023 volunteers.
